With the summer season also comes the return of insects that try to sneak into our homes at all costs, attracted by food or the garbage that we produce.

To keep them away there is certainly the chemical response that employs any number of insecticide products available in supermarkets. These sprays, however, are highly toxic to both the people who inevitably come in contact by breathing them and alas, for the insects, that do not survive the treatment.

Fortunately, there is a natural solution! Here are some plants that help us ward off these pesky creatures without causing them any harm.

  • Lavender: This plant is often used as an ornament in flower beds and gardens. Its scent during the flowering phase is delicious, just like its small purple flowers. Put it near balconies, windows, and doors (planted in pots or in the ground), and it will help you keep away flies, moths, and mosquitoes.
  • Laurel: This plant is often grown and trimmed like a hedge. In fact, it is well-suited for this purpose because of its thick foliage. The smell of the leaves also keeps away mice, cockroaches, flies, and moths. Keep a vase near your doors and windows to prevent these creatures from entering your home.

  • Basil: This plant as well as providing a terrific touch of flavor to countless recipes is also useful for keeping out insects. Again, in this case, what makes the difference is the strong smell of the leaves which is very pleasant to humans but not so much for flies!
  • Tansy: This plant is perhaps less well-known but in the past, its uses ranged from the culinary to pharmaceuticals. Its effectiveness is such that it was placed near corpses to delay the appearance of worm larvae. Today its main use is as an insect repellent.

  • Wormwood: This plant is perhaps best known for its use in the preparation of absinthe. It grows very easily in most environments and its thick foliage has a pungent odor that repels insects.
  • Lemon grass is a popular plant and known as a natural mosquito repellent. It can often be found as an ingredient in insecticides but having a plant close to home is the most effective solution to the problem of flies and mosquitoes.

There are several natural ways to ward off insects and the ideal would be to put into practice several remedies at the same time! In any case, here is another technique to employ while using fragrant plants as insect repellents. It consists of hanging a transparent plastic bag full of water, lemon juice and a few coins --- the twinkling caused by the reflection of the sunlight on the coins that are inside the water bag (maintained shiny by the lemon juice), confuses the flies makes them fly away!
