The images of a male baby elephant being rejected by its mother moments after birth are certainly a blow to the heart.

This incident happened in a Chinese zoo in 2013 and since then that little baby elephant has become a symbol for all children abandoned at birth by their mothers.

According to the press, the elephant calf cried inconsolably for five very long hours, due to the treatment that he received from his own mother as soon as he came into the world.

Zhuang Zhuang – this is the name chosen for him – was greeted at the moment of his birth with a dramatic event when his own mother rejected and tried to hurt him, and the reason why is not clear.

The birth of an animal is celebrated in all zoos as a rare event but this incident instead created a moment of great tension. In fact, after the continued blows received from its mother, the baby elephant cried inconsolably for five hours.

It is easy to interpret the crying of the baby elephant as if it were human. And what worse trauma can an infant suffer if not that of being mistreated by the person, the infant's own mother, who him or her into the world?

After observing that the situation was not likely to change, the zoo staff intervened and separated the baby elephant from his mother to prevent the mother's behavior from causing him serious injuries.

Luckily, Zhuang Zhuang has been adopted by an animal sanctuary organization and has built a strong bond with the man who takes care of him.

We sincerely hope that the baby elephant can overcome this trauma and that all newborn babies around the world who have been rejected by their mothers can also be rescued from similar situations.
