After many years spent working, it can be difficult to start a new chapter in life that for many retirees consists of "doing nothing" and having a lot of "free time."

In fact, many people fail to adapt to this new phase in their life and end up feeling depressed, alone, and without a purpose.

Of course, family, friendships, and hobbies could certainly help in this situation, but it must be a conscious decision that starts with the person directly concerned.

A case in point is Mr. Bob Nill—everyone calls him, Mr. Bob— from Kansas City, Kansas, who after retiring went through a very difficult period of sadness and loneliness.

For Mr. Bob, it was particularly hard, above all because, in addition to no longer having a job that occupied his time every day, he had also lost his beloved wife.

To improve his situation and quality of life, he decided that he would start a new job as a school crossing guard—to help children cross the street near their school, in complete safety.

Mr. Bob took his new job to heart and for five years was very successful at performing his duties safeguarding and protecting the school children as they crossed the street near their school.

In fact, he did his job so well, that he saved the lives of two schoolchildren by pushing them out of the way of a speeding car that careened out of control and was heading straight for them.

The brave 88-year-old man did not think twice about trying to protect the two children and as he pushed them away, he was hit directly by the car and the full impact proved to be fatal.

In fact, sadly, Mr. Bob later passed away at the hospital due to his injuries, but thankfully, the two children remained unharmed—an altruistic sacrifice that was remembered by the mayor of the city and the entire school.

The woman who was the driver of the car involved in the accident stopped immediately and it was reported that she had suffered injuries herself.

The investigation of the accident together with the standard tests showed that the woman driver was not under the influence of any substance—and that probably, the accident was due to simple and pure distraction.

Mr. Bob was also a coach and loved all the schoolchildren, and he was happy that he had finally found a job that allowed him to leave the house, to have fixed hours, and be responsible while working with kids.

Now, Mr. Bob is gone but he left us—like a true hero and will always be remembered for his final selfless gesture.
