A woman gives birth to twins with different fathers: a rare case

Sometimes in life, strange and unlikely things happen. Nothing is more strange, perhaps, than giving birth to twins and the father finding out that only one of them is his. Recently, a woman gave birth to twins and, for one reason or another (perhaps one of them looked a little too much like someone he knew), the father asked for a paternity test. When the tests came back, DNA revealed that only one of the newborns was his. Albeit rare, this cases, called heteropaternal superfecundation, happen in 1 in 13,000 pregnancies. Most of the time, however, the father is the same; the twins are simply "fraternal" instead of "identical".

How is it even possible that a woman gave birth to twins with different fathers, you ask? The answer is rather simple, really. Once the test results came back, the woman was forced to confess to her husband that she had had an extra-marital affair in the same week that their child was conceived. Her husband had always suspected that she was cheating on him with someone else. The DNA test was just a way to confirm these suspicions. When asked how he planned to handle the situation, he declared that he had no intentions raising or financially supporting the child that was not his.

Best of luck, mom!
