5 home remedies to whiten yellowed pillows and sanitize them without spending too much
The problem of yellowed pillows is one that many of us have to deal with. It is not uncommon that, despite normal washing and care, the covers of our beloved and soft "headrests", after using them for some time, have some unaesthetic yellowish halos, on which it is good to intervene decisively, also to protect our health.
Pillowcases are essential on our pillows, it is true, but it is difficult for them, with constant use, to completely prevent yellowing. After all, we are talking about objects on which we lay our heads for hours every night, which is why keeping them sanitized and in good condition is fundamental: we will also gain a better quality of sleep. If we do not have a way to have them professionally cleaned, it can be useful to know some do it yourself tricks, at very low costs.
1. Using lemon juice and hot water
To make our pillows look like new, just squeeze 6 lemons, pour the juice into a large container with about 2.5 liters of hot water, and soak the yellowed pillows for a couple of hours. Once taken out, we can wash them as we usually do, using detergent.
2. Vinegar and bicarbonate: these "all-rounder" allies are also useful for pillows
These two products are truly perfect for a thousand different uses in household chores. Also in the case of yellowed cushions, it can be useful to make a mixture of 80 grams of baking soda and 125 ml of white wine vinegar. Once mixed, they can be poured into the detergent compartment of the washing machine, in which to wash the pillows to be sanitized and whitened. Drying in the sun after washing is very important.
3. Lemon and hydrogen peroxide
This is a variant of the bleaching method with lemon juice and hot water. Here you will need to fill a large container with hot water, then pour 125 ml of lemon juice and 250 ml of hydrogen peroxide into it. In this mixture you can soak the pillows for about an hour, then wash them in the washing machine and let them dry in the sun.
4. A mixture of detergent and borax
Borax (sodium tetraborate) is a compound that, if used with due caution, is useful in many household chores. Also for yellowed pillows, it can be effective to mix it with detergent and other "ingredients" in the washing machine, remembering to use gloves and a mask when we handle it. Create a mix of: 200 grams of detergent, 80 grams of borax, 250 ml of dishwasher soap, 250 ml of chlorine-free bleach and hot water. By putting everything in the washing machine, you should ensure a full whitening wash, to be completed with drying in the sun.
5. Use tea tree essential oil, with a little baking soda
10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil, mixed with 80 grams of baking soda, will be enough to sprinkle evenly on our yellowed pillows. Let them rest for 45 minutes and then you can remove everything: the results should reward the wait!
