An act of kindness could change the life of the person near to you for the better - have you ever thought about this? Sometimes, an offer of a coffee or a chat while waiting for the bus is sufficient to improve the mood of someone who needs it. If this is true for everyone, it is even more true for those people who are usually considered "invisible", in other words, the homeless. It seems too easy to judge these people without really knowing their stories, and it would be much easier to offer them a show of true solidarity.

Joe Wilson, for example, never refused to do this and always offered a coffee and a chat to a man who lived on the street near the bar he used to go to every weekend for breakfast.

Joe Wilson went to Glasgow's "Old Salty's" cafe every weekend for breakfast. Each time, he would get an extra cup of coffee for Daniel, a homeless man who sold magazines just outside the coffee shop. Over the years, Joe has developed a special friendship with Daniel and, more often than not, he leaves him several cups of coffee already paid for at the bar, so he can have one whenever the temperatures drop too low. Daniel was not always homeless: before having to live on the street, the man was a chef, but then he lost his job. Daniel really appreciates what Joe does for him: "Joe is a very nice guy, he comes here every week and always comes to have a chat and offers me coffee. He's not rich or anything, he's just an amazing and kind man."

One day, however, it was Joe who received an unexpected surprise. The man had gone to the bar like he did every Saturday morning for breakfast, but when he went to the cashier to pay, the cashier replied that someone had already settled the bill. It was Daniel!

"Today I did everything as usual but when I went to pay for breakfast," said Joe, "the girl from the bar told me it had already been paid... by Daniel. He had won £ 20 on a scratch card and he decided he would thank me for what I had done for him in the past." Actually, Joe stated that Daniel hadn't won the scratch card money, as he didn't gamble, but had preferred to tell him this so he wouldn't feel guilty. Obviously, Daniel can barely make a living, which made his gesture of gratitude even more meaningful. We can all certainly take a cue from his behavior and show gratitude towards those who manage to improve our lives every day.
