The woman anonymously told about her horrible birthday experience with her stepdaughter on Mumsnet. The stepdaughter was convinced that she was getting a great gift for her stepmother. The stepdaughter had decided to get her stepmother a table reserved for two at a famous restaurant, for a relaxing afternoon tea. So, it came as a huge shock when the birthday girl discovered that she had to pay the bill in full. Here is what she said in her own words: "So Saturday is my birthday. My stepdaughter and her husband booked for my husband and me to go to an elegant afternoon tea on Sunday afternoon at the best restaurant in town. I thanked her for such a wonderful gift etc. and asked her to confirm the time, and if there was a booking number for the table, and so on. She gave me a copy of the booking and said that it was all booked in my name, which was great But then I was confused when I realized that I would have to pay the bill. So the gift was simply the table reservation. I believe my stepdaughter was being sincere when she gave me a gift. I asked politely again, just to be clear, if I had got it right, and it was exactly the case - I would have to pay the restaurant bill in full."

The woman was truly stunned by this so-called gift which some would consider an insult. She said: "I was genuinely shocked by the nature of this gift. But in the end I decided to go, because I like the place she had booked and it is usually very difficult to get into. But I've never heard that making a reservation is a birthday present in itself! "
