Son demands that his mother give his fiancé her engagement ring, but she refuses: "It's not a family heirloom"
When a son or daughter announces they are to be married, it is always a great reason to celebrate. A woman posted on Reddit a story about how her son Sam, who has been going out with Emily for many years, finally decided to propose to her. There would be nothing strange about this news, were it not for the fact that Sam asked his mother to give her engagement ring to Emily. It is quite common for the engagement ring to be an heirloom, passed down for generations, but this was not the case. The woman, flattered as she was, refused to give up her engagement ring. Did she do the right thing?

The two sweethearts communicated the good news to their parents in private, adding that they would have liked to have a further conversation with them, and in particular, with Sam's mother. Sam and Emily, both 26 years old and in a long-term relationship for several years, wanted Sam's mom to offer her engagement ring to Emily. The reasons for such a gesture were these: Sam would have saved a lot of money on the purchase of a new ring and the two would not start their life as a married couple in debt; Emily, on the other hand, really liked the ring very much and, finally; they thought it would be nice to "continue the tradition" (i.e. handing down a family heirloom).
Sam's mom, however, politely refused their request for the simple fact that the ring was certainly not a family heirloom, but a piece of jewelry that her husband had bought for her many years ago. The woman also still has many years to live and would like to continue to do so with the ring on her finger: "When I am older, I will be happy to give it to their future children".
Sam and Emily, however, were very disappointed by her response: Sam called his mother "a materialistic, selfish person", pointing out that diamonds are expensive and that now, because of his mother's refusal, he would have to go into debt to buy a ring. And as if that weren't enough, even Emily showed her disappointment: "Emily was disappointed and said she had hoped my ring could become an heirloom and that it would be the defining moment confirming that she had been accepted into our family (I've always liked Emily and we've always had a great time)," explained the woman.
The woman's husband supported his wife and told their son to leave when he started to get angry and insistant. Although he respected any choice of his wife, he was also pleased that his wife still wanted his ring after so many years.
